  4. Safety and Security: Many all-inclusive resorts provide a safe and controlled environment, which can be reassuring for some travelers.

Cons of Staying at an All-Inclusive Resort:

  1. Less Authentic Experience: All-inclusive resorts can feel isolated from the real Costa Rica, which may be important if you seek an authentic cultural experience.
  2. Cost: While convenient, all-inclusive resorts can be more expensive than arranging meals and activities independently.

Costa Rica All Inclusive Resorts Transportation

There are two airports in Costa Rica. These are the San Jose International Airport and Liberia International Airport.

costa rica airports maps

Several of the all inclusive resorts are located in the Guanacaste Province. For these resorts, it is often more convenient to fly into Liberia International Airport.

Most of these resorts do not include transportation from the airport.

For certain areas of the country (such as resorts on the Osa Peninsula) it usually makes the most sense to fly into the San Jose Airport and then take a domestic flight.

For resorts located on the Central Pacific, such as in Jaco or Manuel Antonio, we suggest flying into San Jose Airport.

You then have a few options to get from either international airport to your resort.

  1. We suggest first contacting the resort you choose how much they will charge for a shuttle from the airport.
  2. If you will be flying into Liberia you can get a price quote from our favorite family of official taxi drivers. This will likely be the most affordable and easiest way to transfer to your resort.
  3. If you will have a larger group and want a more comfortable ride, you can get a price quote from our favorite transfer company Adobe Transfers. They operate all over the country.
  4. If you would like a shared shuttle from the airport, check out Bookaway. They consistently have the best selection of shared shuttles with reputable companies.
  5. Or, if you would like a lot of flexibility during your trip, you might opt to rent a car. Our favorite rental car company in Costa Rica, Adobe has given us a 10% discount plus other perks to pass on to you.

What to Look for When Booking a Costa Rica All-Inclusive Resort

Here are all the things we tend to consider before selecting an all-inclusive resort experience in Costa Rica.

Reviews

Before booking anything we definitely suggest reading the reviews, both positive and negative.

We find that sometimes a resort will have a low review score, but once we read the reviews we see that there may be only a few negative reviews and it is sometimes over very nit-picky things such as “the coffee wasn’t as strong as I like.”

On the flip side of that, read the positive reviews and make sure they sound legit. we have seen resorts before in which the reviews sound to be manufactured by the employees.

Amenities

When staying at an all-inclusive resort amenities are so important!

In Costa Rica you will definitely want to stay at a place with a nice pool.

If staying near the beach, check if the resort has beach access and private beach chairs with umbrellas for guests to use.

If you are looking for an all-inclusive Costa Rica resort with a golf course, fishing tours etc. that is also possible to find.

Just keep in mind that some amenities (such as spa services) may not be included in the all-inclusive price. It is sometimes possible to purchase vacation packages that include some bonus services.

Rooms

Check out the different room options and if they are suitable for your needs.

For example, if you are traveling with kids you might see rooms that say “sleeps four” but with the layout it might actually be cramped with two children.

The Vibe

Check to make sure the vibe of the resort aligns with what you are looking for.

For example, Thomas and I prefer smaller resorts and if they are adult-only, even better!

If you are traveling as a family you will might prefer a bigger resort that can provide something for everyone.

Cancellation Policies

Sometimes plans change. We like to make sure that the cancellation policy fits our needs.

In addition, always purchase travel insurance to help cover your trip costs if you get ill and need to change your plans.

Our Opinion on All-Inclusive Resorts in Costa Rica

We think that a relaxing trip to a resort is almost always a great experience.

That being said, we think that Costa Rica is such an amazing country that it deserves to be explored. We suggest balancing your all-inclusive stay with some exploration as well.

For example, maybe spend a few nights at an all-inclusive beach resort and then rent a car and head to the jungle for a few days to get a different view and perspective of the country.

Another thing to keep in mind is that all-inclusive resorts in Costa Rica often aren’t very budget-friendly. You will likely pay a lot more than you would pay at a resort in the Caribbean or in Mexico.

The service and experience will likely be amazing, but it definitely comes at a price.
