Plan Your Trip (Step-by-Step)

Now comes the fun part (and sometimes, the overwhelming part): figuring out when to come, how long to stay, where to go, and how to get around.

Don’t worry. We’ve done this many times ourselves.

Let’s go step by step.

Step 1 · Choose Your Season

Costa Rica’s weather changes dramatically by region and month, but there’s really no bad time to visit.

  • Dry Season (Dec–Apr): Sunny skies, higher prices, busier beaches. Best for first-timers, escaping cold weather in Northern Hemisphere & families.
  • Green Season (May–Nov): Lush jungles, fewer tourists, lower rates. Best for wildlife & photography.
  • Rainiest Months (Sep–Oct): Wet on Pacific, dry on Caribbean. Best for visiting Puerto Viejo & Tortuguero, cozy vibes, lower prices.

Step 2 · How Long & How Many Stops

Traffic here can be nuts. Don’t overdo it and try to see everything the country has to offer in a short amount of time. You’ll end up spending your entire trip on the road, and that’s just no fun.

Trip Length Suggested Stops Our Tip
1 Week 2 main places Pair one jungle area (La Fortuna or Monteverde) with one beach spot (Manuel Antonio or Tamarindo).
10 Days 3 places Add a travel day between stops and mix rainforest, mountains, and coast for variety.
2 Weeks 4 places Go farther south (Uvita or Osa) or east to the Caribbean for a broader view of Costa Rica.
3 Weeks 5+ places Include remote spots like Tenorio or Sarapiquí. Build in rest days between long drives.

💡 You’ll likely need one night near the airport at the start or end of your trip.

Step 3: Choose Your Airport

Costa Rica is home to two international airports. These are:

Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO)

Costa Rica’s largest and busiest airport, located just outside the capital city.

Best for visiting: Central Valley, Arenal, Monteverde, Central & South Pacific, and the Caribbean Coast.

Liberia International Airport (LIR)

This airport on the Pacific Coast near the Nicaragua border is the preferred entry point for Guanacaste’s beach destinations.

Best for visiting: Papagayo Peninsula, Tamarindo, Nosara, Nicoya Peninsula, La Fortuns, & Monteverde.

Step 4 · Choose Your Destinations

Real talk, it’s so difficult to choose your route here because every town has a different vibes (hence our website name) and they are all so amazing. So, here are a few ideas based on your length of times, travel vibes, time of year, and budget.

Step 5 · Itinerary Ideas by Style

Once you’ve got a feel for your travel style and the areas that fit you best, it’s time to connect the dots.

If you’re planning a one-week trip, these two routes work best for almost every traveler. They’re simple, efficient, and give you a great mix of beach, jungle, volcano, and wildlife without spending your whole vacation on the road.

You can then easily add extra stops to these routes if you want to extend your trip.

7 Days from San José (SJO)

Alajuela (Airport Area) → La Fortuna → Manuel Antonio → Alajuela (Airport Area)

This route is great because:

  • The drive times are manageable
  • It offers a great mix of nature, relaxation, and activities
  • Easy for all budgets and travel styles

Before You Start the Route:
We recommend staying one night in Alajuela (near SJO airport) either at the beginning or end of your trip (or both depending on when your flight is). We don’t recommend staying in downtown San José unless you have a specific reason.

7 Days from Liberia (LIR)

Liberia Airport → Papagayo or Playa Hermosa → La Fortuna → Liberia Airport

This route is the perfect mix of jungle and beaches with good roads and simple logistics.

Before or After the Route:
Staying near the Liberia airport is usually not necessary unless:

  • You have a very late arrival
  • You have a very early departure
  • You’re coming back from La Fortuna and want a low-stress final night

Since Playa Hermosa and Papagayo are so close to LIR, you can usually go straight to the beach.
