The first thing you need to keep in mind when choosing a place to stay is that this area is also sometimes referred to as Santa Elena. Monteverde is actually the overall area and Santa Elena is the main town with all the restaurants and shops.

If you will not have a rental car it is best to stay in the downtown area so that you can easily walk to restaurants and shops.

If you want a more peaceful experience, we suggest staying a bit outside of the downtown.

Just keep in mind that there are a lot of roads in this area that are unpaved. It is always helpful to get a 4×4 rental car or at least an SUV with decent clearance.

If you opt to stay at a hotel that is not directly in the downtown area I suggest asking them if you will need a 4×4 vehicle in order to access the hotel.

My Opinion: It feels so peaceful here with the lush rolling hills and lake. The staff is also excellent.

Just keep in mind that this hotel is located out of the downtown area. You will need to drive to most restaurants.

4. Hotel Trópico Monteverde

Hotel Tropico Monteverde is a charming eco-lodge. This hotel offers comfortable accommodations with a focus on sustainability.

It is perfect if you are seeking a peaceful retreat with easy access to Monteverde’s popular attractions.

Why We Like It: I love the rooms here. They are very spacious, the beds are comfortable and the balconies and indoor seating area in each room make it the perfect place to retreat to after a day of exploring.

Just keep in mind that this place is located just south of the downtown area, but you will need to drive about 10 minutes to get to restaurants and grocery stores.

5. Monteverde Lodge & Gardens by Böëna

Monteverde Lodge & Gardens is a tranquil retreat located in the heart of Monteverde, offering guests a blend of comfort and nature.

The lodge features elegant rooms with garden or forest views, an on-site restaurant serving elevated local cuisine, and a heated outdoor pool. Yes, finally a place with a pool in Monteverde!

The property is surrounded by lush gardens and provides easy access to Monteverde’s famous cloud forests.

Why We Like It: We think this is by far the most luxurious hotel in Monteverde, but it also comes at a much higher price point than other places on this list.

We think that the property is beautiful, we love the jungle pool, and the staff here are very helpful. Oh, and the El Jardin restaurant on the property is so good!

You can also easily walk to other restaurants in town if you prefer.

6. Casitas del Bosque Monteverde

Casitas Del Bosque is a boutique lodge in Monteverde offering cozy, private cabins nestled in the forest.

Each cabin is thoughtfully designed with modern amenities, including a kitchenette, comfortable beds, and a private terrace.

All the rooms include a kitchenette with a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker.

Breakfast is included in the room rate.

Why We Like It: I like this plus for its rustic, but comfortable cabins. We always like to find places with a refrigerator and some way to prepare a few meals. This place is great for that. I also really like the owners here. They are very helpful and kind.

Keep in mind that this is not located directly in the downtown area. You will need to drive about 5 minutes. The hotel is just off of a main road, but I’ve never experienced any issues with it being loud.

7. Tityra Lodge

Tityra Lodge is a cozy eco-lodge that features a variety of accommodations, including rooms that can sleep up to 5 guests.

All the rooms are set up as private A-frame bungalows with balconies and cloud forest views.

Guests can enjoy amenities such as a shared lounge, garden, and complimentary breakfast.

Why We Like It: I love the style of rooms here. They exude such a rustic charm. The included breakfast is also excellent.

One negative is that it can be loud because the lodge is located just next to a main road. Also, you will need to drive about 5 minutes to the downtown area.

8. Rainbow Valley Lodge – Adults Only

Rainbow Valley Lodge offers a peaceful and picturesque stay in Monteverde.

The lodge features cozy, well-equipped rooms and bungalows with private terraces. Each room includes modern amenities such as kitchenettes, comfortable beds, and free Wi-Fi.

The property is close to the downtown area, but it is helpful to have a rental car.

Why We Like It: We love Rainbow Valley Lodge for its breathtaking views and serene setting. I think all the rooms here are beautifully designed and I love the peaceful setting.

The one negative is that they do not offer breakfast at this property. However, all rooms have a kitchenette so you can always just buy a few things like yogurts and fruit at the grocery store to eat in the morning.

Keep in mind that this is an adults-only property.

9. Camino Verde B&B

Camino Verde Bed & Breakfast is a welcoming and affordable accommodation option. It is known for its friendly atmosphere and great location.

The B&B offers a variety of comfortable rooms with modern amenities. There are a variety of rooms available from apartments to Family Superior rooms that can sleep 5 guests.

There is a communal kitchen for guests to use as well as a large outdoor terrace.

Why We Like It: There are many reasons we love this place. A few of the standout features for us are:

• The location is great. I love that you can easily walk to several restaurants from here.
• I like that they have a shared kitchen area. This is so helpful when you want to just cook simple meals while staying at a hotel.
• The rooms are simple but nice. I also like that they have a variety of accommodation types to fit all needs.

10. The Green Tree Lodge

The Green Tree Lodge is a charming bed and breakfast nestled in the lush landscapes of Monteverde.

The property offers cozy cabins with modern amenities, including private balconies that overlook the surrounding forest. They have double rooms with one double bed and quadruple rooms with two double beds.

Why We Like It: I feel like this is one of those places in which the pictures don’t do it justice. It is a simple and rustic accommodation option, but that actually really works in this area. The wooden interior and private balconies make this the perfect nature retreat.

Just keep in mind that this place is located close to the downtown area, but on a peaceful side road. This is great for peace and quiet, but it is helpful to have a rental car to get to restaurants.

11. Belcruz Family Lodge

Belcruz Bed & Breakfast is a family-run accommodation nestled in the tranquil countryside of Monteverde.

This property has amazing views and several nice shirt walking trails.

Why We Like It: We love Belcruz Bed & Breakfast for its peaceful vibes. You can easily be in the downtown area within a 10-minute drive, but this place is a little oasis.

The family that runs this place is amazing and will take great care of you.

Just keep in mind that the style here is somewhat rustic with wooden walls and that there is no AC. But, typically you really do not need Air conditioning in this area anyway.

12. La Guayaba Monteverde

La Guayaba Monteverde is a charming hotel that offers a cozy, home-like experience.

The property features well-decorated rooms with private bathrooms, comfortable beds, and views of the surrounding nature. They offer Queen Rooms and apartments. The apartments all feature a well-equipped kitchen and floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

A delicious homemade breakfast is included in the room rate.

The property is located within walking distance of many restaurants, grocery stores, and bars.

Why We Like It: We love La Guayaba for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and the personalized service provided by the hosts. Ernesto, the owner, is a great person who is always willing to answer all your questions on the area.

If it’s in your budget, I definitely suggest opting for one of the apartments. I love the floor-to-ceiling windows and the option of cooking our own meals.

13. Natüra Hotel Monteverde

Natura Hotel Monteverde is a family-owned hotel nestled in the lush cloud forest.

The hotel features modern rooms with large windows that provide stunning views of the surrounding greenery.

Guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast (which is delicious), a cozy lounge area, and easy access to Monteverde’s top attractions.

Why We Like It: This is one of those places in which the owners make all the difference. Cesar and Daniela are a married couple who run this hotel together. They take so much pride in this place and will go above and beyond to make sure you have an excellent stay.

I think the rooms are very spacious here and I love that they all have a small kitchenette with a coffee maker.

14. Hostel Cattleya

Cattleya Family Hotel in Monteverde offers a cozy and welcoming environment, perfect for budget-conscious travelers.

The hotel features a range of room options from beds in a shared dorm to two-bedroom apartments, all at a very reasonable price point.

It is located on a quiet side street, but in the heart of the downtown area. You can easily walk to restaurants, bars, and grocery stores.

Why We Like It: We love Cattleya Family Hotel for its warm, family-friendly atmosphere and excellent value.

Just keep in mind that this place is a hostel, but it doesn’t have such a strong backpacker vibe as some other places in Costa Rica.

This is a place where you will see a range of travelers including solo travelers, couples, and families.

15. Lidia’s Mountain View

Lidia’s Mountain View is a charming bed and breakfast in Monteverde.

The property features cozy homes and apartments with private bathrooms, small kitchens, and a nice outside area.

The location is very close to the downtown area, but it is helpful to have a car to get to restaurants. You could walk into the downtown area, but it is a main road and there aren’t any sidewalks.

Why We Like It: We have stayed at Lidia’s Mountain View a few times. It is definitely a simple place, but it is always very clean and comfortable. Plus, it is extremely budget-friendly and peaceful.

I also like that all the rooms have small kitchens.

We enjoy sitting outside and enjoying the mountain views with our morning coffee and or in the evenings after a day of exploring.
