Nosara isn’t the simplest place to get to from San Jose, Costa Rica, and the wrong transportation choice can make your first day feel way harder than it needs to be. The San José International Airport is where most international flights arrive and Nosara is a laid-back beach town on the Nicoya Peninsula. It is known for surfing, yoga, and a very slow, easy pace of life.
The good news is that you have a few solid options from shuttles to rental cars to domestic flights. The right one really depends on your budget, how comfortable you are with driving in Costa Rica, and how much flexibility you want once you arrive.
We live in San Jose and have done this trip many times (because Nosara is awesome!). We created this post to give you realistic ways to get from San José to Nosara, let you know what each option is like, and who it makes the most sense for.
Let’s get to it!

Where Is San Jose?

San José is Costa Rica’s capital and a central transportation hub for the country.
However, Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) is not actually in downtown San José. It’s located just outside the city, near Alajuela, which is where most travelers land.

Option #1: Renting a Car (Most Flexibility)
💡 Sarah’s Tip
If you spend your first night near the San José airport, Adobe can deliver your rental car to your hotel in the morning, so you start the drive fresh.
Renting a car is the most popular option for travelers heading to Nosara. This is also our prefferd travel method.
⤷ Book Your Car with 10% Discount
Best for:
- Families
- Groups of friends
- Travelers visiting multiple destinations
- Anyone who wants flexibility for beaches and day trips
What to Expect:
- 5 to 6 hours of driving under normal conditions
- Mostly paved roads until the final stretch
- Unpaved roads close to Nosara
You usually don’t need a 4×4 during the dry season for the main roads, but an SUV is helpful. During rainy season, we strongly recommend a 4×4, especially if your accommodation is on a side road or hillside.
Always ask your hotel or rental host what kind of vehicle they recommend.
We personally use Adobe Rent-a-Car because they’re transparent with pricing, include a free second driver, and provide excellent service. Costa Rica Vibes readers also get an exclusive 10% discount plus other perks when booking through our site.

Things to Do with a Rental Car in Nosara
One of the best parts of renting a car to get from San Jose to Nosara is that you will then have more flexibility to explore in the Nosara area.
A few of our favorite things to do are:
- Go Beach Hopping: Just drive along the coastal roads and you will see plenty of small side roads leading to remote beautiful beaches. We think our favorite beaches in this area are. Playa Nosara, Playa Pelada, Playa San Juanillo, Playa Garza, and Playa Azul.
- See Sea Turtles Nesting: Playa Ostional is a beachfront national park just north of Nosara that is a nesting ground for Olive Ridley sea turtles. The mother turtles arrive once a month to lay their eggs here, but the best time to experience this is typically in the autumn. Sometimes you can see thousands of turtles at one time.Check out our guide to Playa Ostional for more info on how to visit.
- Check Out a Wildlife Sanctuary: We suggest Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary and International Animal Rescue. Both places allow day visitors, but you will need to reserve your spot ahead of time. Additionally, both places are always looking for long-term volunteers.

Option #2: Domestic Flight to Nosara (Fastest Option)
If you prefer to travel quickly and enjoy aerial views of Costa Rica, a domestic flight is an excellent option.
Next to the San Jose International Airport, there is a domestic terminal. From here, you can fly with Sansa Airlines to the small beach town of Nosara (just north of Samara). You can then take a taxi from Nosara down to Samara.
The planes are small, typically seating around 12 passengers, and offer stunning views of the coastline and mountains.
Prices vary depending on the season and how far in advance you book, typically ranging from $70 to $150 one-way.
Travel Time and Comfort
The flight duration to the Nosara Airport is approximately 30 minutes. From here you can get a taxi to your hotel.
Our Opinion on Domestic Flights
We love domestic flights in Costa Rica because they cut your travel time and allow you to enjoy some amazing views of the country. Plus, it is a comfortable and easy way to travel.
However, I wouldn’t always recommend this travel method. For starters, it is often the most expensive transportation method.
Also, I do not recommend this if small planes scare you.
The other things to keep in mind about domestic flights is that they can be cancelled depending on the weather. This typically happens in late December or January when it is very windy near the San Jose Airport, or it can also happen during the rainy season if there is an especially big storm.
Option #3: Private Shuttle (Stress-Free)
A private shuttle (also called a private transfer) is an air-conditioned van with a professional driver that is reserved exclusively for you and your group. You don’t share the ride with other travelers, and the driver handles all navigation from start to finish.
Basically, it’s a very easy and comfortable transportation option.
Best for:
Families, groups, nervous drivers, late arrivals, and travelers who want a simple, door-to-door way to reach Nosara without renting a car.
What to expect:
Your driver will pick you up directly at the airport or your hotel and drive straight to Nosara. When booking, you usually provide your flight details so the driver can monitor delays and be waiting when you arrive.
The trip takes about 5 to 6 hours, similar to driving yourself. You may be able to stop along the way for food or bathroom breaks, but the route itself is fixed. This is a very hands-off option. You just sit back and let someone else do the driving.
Pros:
- Private, door-to-door transportation
- Flexible pickup timing based on your arrival
- No driving or navigation stress
Cons:
- More expensive than shared shuttles
- Priced per vehicle, not per person
Good to know:
Private shuttles tend to make the most sense for families or groups, where the cost is split. If you’re traveling solo or as a couple, a shared shuttle is usually the better value.

Option #4: Shared Shuttle (Budget-Friendly & Easy)
A shared shuttle is a scheduled shuttle service where you ride in a comfortable, air-conditioned van with other travelers heading in the same direction. This option balances cost and convenience without requiring you to drive.
Best for:
Solo travelers, couples, and budget-conscious travelers who want a simple, no-driving way to get to Nosara.
What to expect:
Shared shuttles operate on set schedules and pick you up near the airport or from select hotels. You’ll be traveling with other passengers, and the shuttle may make additional pickups or drop-offs along the way.
Travel time is typically slightly longer than a private shuttle due to multiple stops. Drop-off is generally close to your accommodation, but not always directly at the door, depending on location.
Pros:
- More affordable than a private shuttle
- No driving or navigation required
- Comfortable, air-conditioned vans
Cons:
- Fixed schedules with limited departure times
- Longer travel time due to stops
- Less flexible pickup and drop-off locations
Good to know:
Shared shuttles work best if your arrival lines up with their departure times. If your flight lands late in the day or you’re traveling with a larger group, a private shuttle may be the better fit.

Option #5: Public Bus (Cheapest, Most Complicated)
Public buses are the most budget-friendly way to get to Nosara, but they don’t always run smoothly and can take a really long time because they stop frequently.
Luckily, there is a direct bus from San Jose to Nosara that runs twice a day!
We suggest taking the TIG bus. It leaves daily at 5:30AM and 3:00PM. The ride can take 7 hours or more because it stops a lot along the way.
As far as I know, the bus picks passengers up at the TIG terminal. I marked it on Google Maps here. But, please don’t completely depend on me. I am not completely positive on this.
I believe, you can also take it from the bus stop across from the airport, but please contact them to check. We have not tried this, so I can’t confirm if it always stops and what time exactly it is expected to pick up passengers.
