What’s mandatory, what’s required and what’s optional
Costa Rica’s insurance requirements can feel overwhelming, so here’s a clear breakdown of what’s included, what’s required, and how to get extra peace of mind.
1 · Mandatory
Liability Protection (PLI)
What it covers:
Your perk: Normally there’s a $1,130 deductible on property damage. Booking through Costa Rica Vibes waives it.
Required by Costa Rican law. It doesn’t cover damage to your rental car. You’ll see it pre-checked on the booking form.
2 · Required unless your card covers it
Car Protection (LDW)
What it covers: Collision, rollover and theft damage to your rental car. Deductible: $1,000 ($1,130 with tax). It doesn’t cover tires, vandalism or third-party damage.
Using your credit card instead: If your card includes rental car coverage in Costa Rica, bring an official letter from your bank and you can decline this. You’re then 100% responsible for any damage upfront and handle the claim with your card company. The deposit stays $1,000, on the same credit card.
VISA used to cover this for Gold and Platinum cardholders but stopped in 2021.
3 · Optional
Total Protection (SPP)
Adobe’s top-up for full peace of mind. It sits on top of Liability and Car Protection and adds:

4 · On the form

We always recommend an SUV. Something like a Hyundai Tucson or Creta is fine for most popular destinations, and the extra clearance makes dirt roads and rainy-season potholes a lot less stressful.

Picking up your rental car
When you land at San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR), head outside arrivals and look for the Adobe employee in a blue shirt holding an Adobe sign. They’ll have your flight number, so they’ll be waiting for you.
A free air-conditioned shuttle takes you to the Adobe office, less than five minutes away. The team there sees that you booked through Costa Rica Vibes, applies all your discounts, and gets you on the road.

My family is flying into Liberia Airport, staying at Planet Hollywood resort for 5 nights and I don’t think we will need a car there. But, then we are driving to Monteverde for 4 nights and we would like a car for that. At the end we would return the car to Liberia Airport. what do you think is the best way to go about getting a car for just those few nights?
Hi Michael. This is relatively easy to organize. I suggest booking your rental car from Adobe with Liberia Airport as you pick up spot. In the reservation, you just need to specify that you need your car delivered to Planet Hollywood. Then at the end of your trip you will return the car to adobe’s office next to the Liberia Airport and they will drop you off at the airport. Let me know if you have any other question!
Hi. Do you think it is OK to drive from San Jose to Tortuguero at night? Our flight lands at 7pm and we would like to straight out from the airport to Tortuguero.

Hi Mandy. It is best to spend the night near the airport and head to Tortuguero the next morning. There are two reasons for this.
1. I don’t suggest this drive in the dark
2. To get to Tortuguero you will need to park your rental car in the protected lot and take a boat out to Tortuguero. This boat does not run at night.

Do they speak English at the San jose airport location for car rental pick up?
Hi Lori,
Yes they do! All employees at Adobe Rent-a-Car are well-trained in English. Also, in general, at the airport and in most tourist spots (hotels, restaurants geared towards tourists etc.) you should have no problems with speaking English to communicate.

Hi John. I would book now. During the winter months, Adobe almost always runs out of cars. There is just so much demand at that time! So, definitely book now. Then, if your plans change you can always cancel the car for free.
