There are several transportation options to get between these two locations including rental cars, private shuttles, public buses, shared shuttles, and domestic flights.

We live in San Jose and frequently visit La Fortuna, so this guide is based on our personal experiences. You’ll find information on the 5 best transportation options, what to expect, our recommendations, and a helpful map for your journey.

San Jose and the International Airport

The Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) is the largest international airport in the country. It is located near Alajuela, just west of the capital city of San Jose.

Traffic around the airport can be heavy, with downtown San Jose being about 20 minutes to an hour away. We suggest spending your first night in Alajuela instead.

After a long flight, consider staying near the airport and heading out in the morning.

Where is La Fortuna?

La Fortuna is a beautiful town located in the Alajuela province, about 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of San Jose. The drive from San Jose typically takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic.

La Fortuna is famous for its stunning Arenal Volcano, hot springs, waterfalls, and adventure activities like zip-lining and hiking.

Now lets talk about the options for getting between these two towns….

Option #1: Rental Car to La Fortuna

If you want total control over your trip, from when you leave to where you stop along the way, renting a car is the way to go.

You can pull over for scenic viewpoints, grab lunch at a mountain soda (small local restaurant), or check out roadside attractions The drive is beautiful. You’ll pass through rolling hills, lush farmland, and charming little towns. Having your own car lets you enjoy it all at your own pace.

We suggest renting a car if you are:

• Independent travelers: If you want the freedom to stop at a hidden waterfall or take photos of Arenal Volcano as soon as it peeks into view, a rental car is perfect for you.
• Families: Are you traveling with kids or lots of luggage? It’s much easier to have your own vehicle and skip the stress of shuttle schedules.
• Adventurers: Planning to explore La Fortuna’s nearby hot springs, waterfalls, hiking trails, or even take a side trip to Río Celeste? A car makes it possible.
• Groups: If you’re traveling with friends or extended family, splitting the cost can be cheaper than multiple shuttle tickets.
• Exploring beyond La Fortuna: If you’re heading on to Monteverde, Guanacaste, or the Pacific Coast afterward, a car gives you complete flexibility.

We don’t recommend renting a car if you are:

• On a tight budget: Rental costs, insurance, and fuel can add up. A shared shuttle or public bus will be cheaper.
• Traveling solo: If you’re alone, you may find a shuttle more cost-effective.
• Not confident driving in Costa Rica: The route is fully paved but includes winding roads, occasional heavy rain, and traffic as you leave San José. If that feels stressful, there are better options.
• Staying put at your hotel: If your plan is to relax at a resort and book tours with included transportation, you might not need a car.

Picking Up Your Car at SJO Airport

After landing, you’ll pass through immigration and collect your bags. When you exit the airport, you’ll see a crowd holding signs for tour guides, taxis, and shuttles.

Look for someone holding an Adobe Rent-a-Car sign. They’ll take you on a short (just a few minutes) shuttle ride to the Adobe office. From there, you’ll do some quick paperwork, grab the keys, and be on your way!

Pro Tip: Spending the night near the airport? Adobe will drop your car at your hotel the next morning for free (within 12 miles of their office). Just make a note when booking.

What Kind of Car Should You Rent?

For San José to La Fortuna, we suggest an SUV with good clearance. You don’t need a 4×4 for the main route, but depending on the season and where you’re staying, it could be helpful.

Here’s what to consider:

• Dry Season (Dec–April): A standard SUV should be fine for most travelers.
• Rainy Season (May–Nov): Roads can get slick, and if your hotel is on a steep or unpaved road, a 4×4 is better (especially in October or November when rains are heaviest).
• Around La Fortuna: The main roads are paved, but some hotels, adventure parks, or hot springs are on gravel or hilly roads. Better to be safe than stuck.

Travel Tip: Ask your La Fortuna hotel if a 4×4 is needed for access. Some spots have steep drives or uneven surfaces, especially near Arenal Volcano.

The Driving Route from San Jose to La Fortuna

If you’re heading from San José to La Fortuna, we suggest taking Route 1 west toward San Ramón, then following Route 702 north. This is the most common route and, in our opinion, the easiest overall.

The roads are well-paved, there are plenty of gas stations and restaurants before you reach San Ramón, and the scenery is gorgeous.

Travel Tip: There are a lot of curves as you get closer to La Fortuna, so if you’re prone to motion sickness, come prepared with Dramamine or ginger chews.

You will pass through a few toll booths on Route 1 before San Ramón. They’re inexpensive (usually under ₡600 / $1 each) and accept USD, colones, and sometimes credit cards. That said, not all booths take cards, so keep small bills or coins in colones handy just in case.

We don’t recommend taking the alternate mountain route past Poás Volcano unless you have a specific reason to go that way. The roads there are rougher and more winding.

Drive Time: Around 3–4 hours, depending on traffic and weather.

Travel Tip: If you’re leaving San José in the morning, try to head out early (before 7am) or later in the morning (after 9am) to avoid the worst rush-hour traffic. Luckily, most of the traffic will be headed into the city rather than out, but you never know around here.

Possible Sightseeing, Food & Gas Stops

If you have extra time and want to make the drive part of the adventure, there are some great places to stop along the San Ramón route.

Scenic & Adventure Stops

• San Luis Adventure Park – Perfect for thrill-seekers! Zip-lining, rappelling, white-water rafting, nature trails, and even a butterfly garden. No reservations needed.
• Bosque Nuboso El Cocora – A lovely nature stop with two peaceful walking trails, a butterfly garden, and plenty of hummingbirds.
• Lands in Love – A quirky eco-adventure park offering zip-lining, rafting, ATV tours, and the famous biking zip-line you may have seen online. If you want to try it, call ahead to check availability.

Food Stops

• Doña Emilce’s House – Homey, traditional Costa Rican food that tastes like you’ve been invited to a family meal.
• Loveat Restaurant (at Lands in Love) – A cozy vegan restaurant with hearty, flavorful dishes and a colorful setting.
• La Rancha Restaurante – A peaceful garden setting with tasty traditional dishes. It’s a slight detour, but worth it for a relaxed break.

Gas & Restroom Stops

All gas stations in Costa Rica are full-service. Stay in your car and an attendant will fill it for you. Restrooms are usually outside the station; some are unlocked, others require you to ask for a key.

⚠ Gas Station Gap Alert: There’s a long stretch between San Ramón and La Fortuna with no gas stations. Fill up before leaving San Ramón.

• Servicentro Moligas – My go-to in San Ramón. It’s easy to pull in and out, even in a larger SUV.
• Gasolinera Chachagua – Located just before La Fortuna. Handy if you want to top up before exploring the area.

Safety

Be careful about leaving your car unattended. Petty theft can sometimes happen, and a car filled with suitcases that is left alone will be a prime target.

If we stop, we like to always make sure that our vehicle is within view. If you are stopping at an adventure park with a private lot, you can usually feel pretty safe to leave your stuff in your locked car.

Option #2: Private Shuttle to La Fortuna

If you’re looking for a stress-free, door-to-door travel option without having to drive yourself, a private shuttle might be the perfect fit.

These are comfortable, air-conditioned vans driven by experienced local drivers who know the San José → La Fortuna route like the back of their hand.

Unlike shared shuttles, you won’t be picking up or dropping off other passengers. The vehicle is reserved just for you and your group, which makes the trip smoother, more flexible, and often faster.

• Door-to-door convenience: Your driver will meet you at San José International Airport (SJO) or your hotel and drop you right at your accommodation in La Fortuna.

Prices typically range from $200–$280 total for the group, depending on the number of passengers and your exact pickup/drop-off locations.

Most companies charge a flat rate per vehicle, so this can be a cost-effective choice for families or small groups.

• Typical travel time: 3.5–4.5 hours, depending on traffic and weather

• More expensive for solo travelers or couples: Since pricing is per vehicle (not per person), it’s only really cost-effective if you’re traveling with 3–4+ people.
• Not ideal if you want to explore later: If you plan to have a rental car in La Fortuna, you may be better off renting one in San José and driving yourself.

• Groups of friends traveling together
• Travelers arriving at non-standard times (early morning, midday, etc.)

Option #3: Shared Shuttle to La Fortuna

Shared shuttles are a great middle-ground option if you want comfort and convenience without paying the higher price tag of a private transfer.

These air-conditioned passenger vans usually seat 8–15 people and run on a set schedule between popular destinations. They will pick up from San José International Airport (SJO) or nearby hotels and will drop you off directly at your accommodation in La Fortuna.

Why We Like Shared Shuttles

• Door-to-door service: No need to figure out bus schedules or haul your luggage across town. The driver will meet you at your hotel (or just outside the airport) and drop you right at your La Fortuna lodging.
• Comfortable ride: Vans are modern, air-conditioned, and driven by professionals who know the road well.
• Budget-friendly compared to private shuttles: You’ll share the ride (and cost) with other travelers. This is perfect for solo travelers or couples who want something easier than the bus but more affordable than going private.

When a Shared Shuttle Might Not Be the Best Fit

• Families with young kids: If you’ll need frequent stops or more flexibility, a rental car or private shuttle will likely be more comfortable.
• Late arrivals: Shared shuttles only operate during the day. If your flight arrives in the late afternoon or evening, you’ll need to spend the night in San José and head to La Fortuna the next morning.
• Tight schedules: These shuttles make multiple passenger pickups and drop-offs, which can add extra time. If you’re on a strict itinerary, driving or going private may be faster.
• Lots of luggage or oversized gear: Most companies allow one suitcase and one carry-on per person. If you have extra bags or sports equipment, check with the shuttle company in advance.
• Wanting a rental car in La Fortuna: If you plan to have a car once you’re there, it’s better to just rent one from San José and drive yourself. While there are rental companies in La Fortuna, selection can be limited during busy months.
• Need flexibility: Shuttles run on a fixed schedule, so you won’t be able to make spontaneous stops for photos, snacks, or detours.

What to Expect

• Travel Time: About 3.5–4.5 hours, depending on how many stops are made for pickups and drop-offs.
• Price: Usually $55–$70 per person.
• Luggage: One suitcase and one small carry-on are typically included. For extra or oversized items (like surfboards), confirm with the company ahead of time.

• Book Your Shared Shuttle from the Airport (7:00AM and 1:30PM Departures)
• Book Your Shared Shuttle from a Hotel (7:00AM and 1:30PM Departures)

Option #4: Domestic Flight

If you prefer to travel quickly and enjoy aerial views of Costa Rica, a domestic flight is an excellent option.

Booking a Flight: The main airline that flies between San José and La Fortuna is Sansa. Prices vary depending on the season and how far in advance you book. You can check schedules and availability directly on their website.

Travel Time and Comfort: The flight to La Fortuna takes about 30 minutes. The planes are small (usually seating around 12 passengers) and offer stunning views of mountains, rivers, and Arenal Volcano as you approach.

Things to Know:

• The domestic terminal at San José International Airport (SJO) is about a 5-minute walk from the main international terminal, so factor that into your timing if you’re arriving from another flight.
• This is not the best choice for travelers who are nervous about flying in small planes.
• On the flip side, it’s easily the fastest way to get to La Fortuna, and the views alone make it a memorable experience.
• You’ll need to take a taxi or pre-arranged transfer from La Fortuna’s small airstrip to your hotel.

Cost: Domestic flights can be more expensive than other transportation options, especially during high season, but the time saved can be worth it if you’re on a tight schedule.

Option #5: Public Bus

Option A: Direct Bus

• Departs from Terminal 7‑10 in San José
• Typically departs around 8:40 AM daily
• Takes approximately 4–6 hours
• Costs around $10 USD

Option B: Indirect Route (More Flexibility)

• First leg: San José to Ciudad Quesada (departures every 30 minutes from ~5 AM to 6 PM, via Terminal 7‑10)
• Fare: $5.60 USD
• Duration: ~3 hours 40 minutes
• Then: Transfer in Ciudad Quesada to a bus bound for La Fortuna (operates 4:00 AM – 9:30 PM)
• Fare: About $3.10 USD
• Duration: ~1.5 hours
• Total travel time: around 5–5.5 hours
• Total cost: approximately $8–9 USD

Things to Know Before You Go

• Departure point: Buses leave from Terminal 7‑10 in downtown San José. If you’re coming from the airport, you’ll need a taxi or rideshare to reach the terminal.
• First-come, first-served: Tickets aren’t sold in advance. Just arrive early and buy directly from the driver.
• Be prepared: The ride is long and not luxurious. Bring snacks, water, layers (sometimes the AC is blaring and other times it doesn’t work) and something to pass the time. Also, keep an eye on your belongings. Keep al valuables on you. We have heard of people getting off the bus and finding their overhead luggage has been stolen.

Transportation Once in La Fortuna

La Fortuna is one of those destinations where you can get around without a car, but having one makes life much easier, especially if you want to explore beyond the main town or visit attractions at your own pace.

Do You Need a Rental Car in La Fortuna?

If you’re staying in or near downtown La Fortuna and plan to spend most of your time on guided tours (many of which include transportation), you’ll probably be fine without a car.

If you’re staying at a resort and plan to:

• Eat all your meals on-site
• Take part in activities organized by the resort
• Book day trips with included transportation

…you likely won’t need a rental car either.

However, if you want to:

• Visit multiple hot springs on your own schedule
• Explore attractions like Río Celeste, Lake Arenal, or hidden waterfalls
• Dine at restaurants outside of your hotel or the main strip

…then having a rental car is a game-changer.

Day Tour Transport

Many tour companies in La Fortuna offer free hotel pickup and drop-off for activities like zip lining, white-water rafting, canyoning, or guided volcano hikes. If you’re planning to book tours every day, you might not need a car at all.

Just make sure to double-check with your hotel or tour provider to confirm transport is included.

• Hanging Bridges, La Fortuna Waterfall, Volcano Hike, & Hot Springs – This is a full-day tour with transportation from La Fortuna town area. It is pricey, but I think it is an outstanding value when you add it all up because the tour includes lunch and ends at Baldi hot springs with dinner.

Walkability

Downtown La Fortuna is small and easy to walk. You’ll find restaurants, shops, small grocery stores, and tour offices all within a few blocks.

If you’re staying in town, walking is a great way to get to meals and shops, but you’ll still need transportation for most activities and attractions.

Final Tip

If you’re debating whether to rent a car or rely on shuttles and taxis, ask yourself these two questions:

1. Am I staying in or very close to downtown La Fortuna (or at a resort that offers everything I need)?
2. Am I planning to do mostly guided tours or activities with included transportation?

If the answer to both is yes, you’re likely fine without a car. If not, we recommend renting one in San José before making the trip.

Our Opinion on Getting from San Jose to La Fortuna

Typically, we suggest renting a car when traveling from San Jose to La Fortuna. This gives you the most flexibility to explore the beautiful surroundings at your own pace.

However, if you’re on a tight budget or prefer not to drive, a shared or private shuttle is a convenient option.

For those on a very tight budget, the public bus is the cheapest option, but it requires traveling to downtown San Jose.
