The Liberia International Airport
The Liberia International Airport (LIR) is super easy to navigate and way more relaxed than the San José International Airport. The airport is located just outside the city of Liberia.
Where are you in the planning process?
We love recommending Liberia Airport because it’s less hectic, has lighter traffic, and makes it really convenient to get on your way if you’re heading to La Fortuna, Monteverde, or staying along the beautiful beaches of Guanacaste.
It’s also a great jumping-off point if you plan to rent a car or book a shuttle. Pickup services run right outside the arrivals area.
Basically, everything just feels a bit calmer here, which is always a nice way to start your vacation.

Picking Up Your Rental Car
Most rental agencies, including Adobe, are located just a 5-minute drive from the Liberia airport. Don’t worry, you won’t need to figure out transportation to their office.
Here’s how it works with Adobe:
- When you book, you’ll add your flight details to your reservation.
- An Adobe employee will be waiting for you outside the airport holding a sign with your name.
- They’ll bring you in an air-conditioned shuttle to the Adobe office nearby.
- You’ll go over paperwork, get your keys, and be on your way to La Fortuna in no time!
If your flight is delayed, they’ll keep track and adjust accordingly. Super easy!
Which Car to Rent
For the route from Liberia to La Fortuna, any vehicle will work, but we almost always suggest renting an SUV. Here’s why:
- More comfort for the long, curvy drive
- Better handling on hilly or rural roads
- More space for luggage, especially if you’re traveling with others
If you’re planning to explore remote areas, or if you’re visiting during the rainy season (August–November), a 4×4 SUV is a smart idea.
💡 Travel Tip: Ask your La Fortuna hotel if it’s located on a paved road. Some vacation rentals are down unpaved roads that can be tricky in a regular car.

The Driving Experience to La Fortuna
The drive from Liberia to La Fortuna is scenic and fully paved, with plenty of curves and elevation changes as you head into the mountains.
Here’s what to expect:
- You’ll start on Route 21 leaving the airport area.
- Shortly after passing through Liberia’s center, you’ll turn onto Route 1 (the Interamericana Highway). This is a wide and well-maintained road, but it has its quirks like random crosswalks and slow zones, so drive with caution.
- After about 35 km (22 miles), you’ll reach Cañas, where you’ll turn left onto Route 142.
- From there, the road winds around Lake Arenal and eventually brings you into La Fortuna.
Estimated drive time: 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions.
Travel Tip: If you or any of your passengers tend to get car sick, I highly suggest taking motion sickness pills. The first half of the drive is fine, but the route around Lake Arenal is super windy and always makes me sick.
Food & Fuel Tips Before You Hit the Road
Before you turn onto Route 1, you’ll pass several familiar fast food spots at the center of Liberia, including: Taco Bell, KFC, Subway, Burger King, Arby’s

There are also grocery stores nearby if you’d rather stock up on snacks and drinks for the road:
- Walmart Liberia (large, fully stocked)
- Maxi Pali and Mega Super (more local-style grocery stores)
And, there are several gas stations if you need.
I suggest stopping at these places if you need some snacks or a quick bite. There are restaurants along the rest of the drive, but no fast food places.

Navigation Tips
We recommend using Waze or Google Maps while driving in Costa Rica. Waze is especially popular here and tends to give the most accurate travel times.
We don’t recommend driving this route after dark if you can avoid it. Roads can be poorly lit, there are no street lights in rural areas, and fog can roll in unexpectedly near Lake Arenal.
Try to start your drive by early afternoon at the latest, just to be safe.

Option #2: Private Shuttle to La Fortuna
A private shuttle is a comfortable van designated just for you and your travel companions, driven by a professional, experienced driver.
This is a great way to get from Liberia to La Fortuna if you’d rather sit back and relax without worrying about driving yourself, especially after a long flight.
If you’re traveling with a family or larger group, this option can actually be more cost-effective than a shared shuttle, since you’re paying one flat rate for the whole vehicle instead of per person. Plus, it’s much more convenient.

The downside is, you will still need transportation once you arrive in La Fortuna for day-to-day activities.

Shared shuttles are a budget-friendly and comfortable way to get from Liberia to La Fortuna without the hassle of navigating or driving yourself.
These shuttles operate on set schedules and typically include air-conditioned vans shared with a small group of other travelers. It’s a great way to get door-to-door service without breaking the bank.
They offer pickups from both the Liberia International Airport and hotels in the Liberia area. The ride typically takes 4 to 5 hours.

Option #4: Public Bus
Traveling by public bus from Liberia to La Fortuna is the most cost-effective option. However, it can be somewhat complicated and takes a lot longer.
Personally, I don’t recommend it.
Public Bus Route:
- Take the bus from downtown Liberia to Cañas (depart at 10:30 AM and arrive at 11:40 AM)
- From Cañas to Tilaran (depart at 12:00 PM and arrive at 12:30 PM)
- From Tilaran to La Fortuna (depart at 12:30 PM and arrive at 15:00 PM)
So, as you can see, it is very easy to miss your connection with this route. You could then be left waiting several hours until the next bus arrives.
Cost and Duration:
- Ticket prices are around $10 – $15 USD per person.
- The journey typically takes around 4.5 hours if you catch all the connections.
Pre-Purchasing Tickets: Tickets can be bought directly at the terminal on the day of travel. Arrive early to book a ticket, especially during peak tourist seasons.
Additional Tips:
- Keep an eye on your belongings
- Bring snacks, water, and entertainment for the long journey.
- Bring layers. Sometimes they will have the AC blasting and other times the AC might be broken and you’ll be so warm.

Option #5: Domestic Flight
Looking for the fastest way to get from Liberia to La Fortuna? A domestic flight is your best bet!
Costa Rica’s main regional airline, Sansa Airlines, now offers a convenient flight route from Liberia Airport (LIR) to the small local airport in La Fortuna (FON). The flight takes only about 30 minutes, making it a great option if you’re short on time and want to avoid a long drive.
This is also a super scenic flight, with epic views of volcanoes, lakes, and jungle landscapes. It’s basically a mini aerial tour of northern Costa Rica.
Travel Tip: If small planes scare you, I don’t recommend this option.

- Flight Duration: ~30 minutes
- Check-in Time: Arrive at least 1 hour before departure
- Total Time with check-in: About 1.5–2 hours, still far faster than driving
Cost
- Approximate Price: $150 per person (one way)
- Price varies slightly based on season and availability
What to Know Before You Book
- Luggage limits are strict: usually around 20–30 lbs total, including carry-on and checked bags.
- Weather delays can happen, especially in the rainy season.
- The La Fortuna Airport (FON) is located just a few minutes from town. You will need to take a taxi or shuttle from the airport to your hotel.
Transportation Once in La Fortuna
OK, so you’ve arrived in La Fortuna, now, how do you get around? Here are your local transportation options:
Rent a Car Locally
If you don’t want to drive all the way from Liberia but still want the flexibility of having a car for a few days, we’ve got good news.
Adobe Rent-a-Car has an office just outside of downtown La Fortuna, and they’ll deliver your rental car to you for free if you’re staying within the central area.
This is an awesome option if you plan to do a few day trips or have onward travel to places like Monteverde, Rio Celeste, or the Pacific coast.
You can enjoy your time in town without worrying about parking or navigating winding roads and then start your self-drive adventure when you’re ready.

Book Tours with Transportation Included
If you don’t want to rent a car at all, don’t worry! Most major tours in La Fortuna include hotel pickup and drop-off. This is super convenient, especially if you’re staying close to town.
Just keep in mind that tours with included transportation tend to be more expensive.

Our Opinion on Getting from Liberia to La Fortuna
In our experience, the best way to travel from Liberia to La Fortuna really depends on your travel style, budget, and how confident you feel behind the wheel.
If you’re comfortable driving, we almost always recommend renting a car. The route is paved and scenic, and having your own vehicle gives you the most flexibility. It’s also ideal if La Fortuna is just one stop on a bigger Costa Rica itinerary and you plan to continue on to places like Monteverde or the coast.
Not into driving? No worries! A private shuttle is a great stress-free option, especially if you’re traveling with kids or a group and want door-to-door service without juggling public transit or navigating unfamiliar roads.
For solo travelers or those on a tighter budget, a shared shuttle hits the sweet spot of affordability and comfort. You’ll sacrifice a bit of flexibility, but it’s a solid choice if you’re happy to go with the flow.
And if you’re short on time or just want to skip the road entirely, the domestic flight is by far the fastest way to get there. It’s also a gorgeous ride, but just be ready to travel light and double-check those baggage limits.
