The Costa Rica Car Rental Scam: Why Prices Look Cheap (and What to Do Instead)

Renting a car is usually one of the best ways to get around Costa Rica. That is, until you see rental cars advertised for $1 or $5 per day and start wondering if this is a Costa Rica car rental scam.

The short answer? Kind of.

This exact situation happened to us the first time we rented a car here. We booked what looked like an unbelievable deal online, only to arrive at the rental counter and be told the total would be hundreds of dollars more than expected.

After living in Costa Rica for years (and helping people plan trips here for a living) this is the part of travel planning I hate the most. I want you arriving excited for your vacation, not stressed out at a rental counter wondering what went wrong.

So I decided to break this down clearly. In this post I’ll explain why prices look unrealistically cheap online, what fees you should actually expect, how to avoid unpleasant surprises, and how to rent a car in Costa Rica in a way that’s transparent, stress-free, and fully legitimate.

How We Fell for the Costa Rica Car Rental Scam

A few months after we moved to Costa Rica, my mom came to visit.

At the time, Thomas and I didn’t know much about the country yet, but we figured renting a car would be the easiest way to get around. I searched online and found what looked like an incredible deal, rental cars advertised for around $1 per day.

It felt too good to be true… but we booked it anyway.

My mom had excellent credit card insurance, so we assumed we’d be fine. She has a credit card but had previously used her coverage throughout Europe to rent cars without any issues. previously rented cars.

When she landed at the San José airport, we took the rental company’s shuttle to their nearby office. Immediately, we realized something was wrong.

Everyone ahead of us in line was arguing with the staff. People were frustrated, confused, and clearly not expecting what they were being told. My mom started to panic, worried she didn’t have the right proof of insurance.

When it was finally our turn, we learned why.

We were told there was mandatory insurance required by Costa Rican law. This insurance hadn’t been included in the price we booked online. The total jumped by several hundred dollars on the spot. On top of that, we were asked to leave a $1,000 deposit on our credit card.

At that point, we didn’t really have a choice. We needed the car and our plans depended on it. So we paid.

The car itself was fine, and we had a great trip, but the experience left us with a really bad feeling about renting cars in Costa Rica.

That’s when we decided to figure out what was actually going on.

So, when we started this website we vowed to find a better option and to make sure our readers were aware of these potential issues.

Why Costa Rica Car Rental Prices Look So Cheap Online

Most ultra-cheap Costa Rica car rental prices come from large third-party booking sites. These sites usually show only the base daily rate for the vehicle and leave out Costa Rica’s mandatory insurance and deposit requirements.

On the booking screen, everything looks fine. The total seems unbelievably low. Insurance is mentioned vaguely (often without pricing) which makes it easy to assume your credit card coverage applies.

But in Costa Rica, liability insurance is required by law, and credit card coverage usually does not replace it. That cost is collected at pickup, not during booking.

So when travelers arrive and are suddenly told the real total, it feels like a scam, even though the charges themselves are legal.

So, that’s it. 

You hit “Reserve” and think you’re getting an absolute steal for your rental car. 

You arrive in sunny Costa Rica ready to start your vacation in paradise and the first encounter you end up having is at a rental car counter where you are informed that you will actually have to pay several hundred dollars more than you originally expected.

Not the best way to start your travels.

Fair? Good business tactic? I think not.

Why We Now Rent With Adobe (Every Time)

After that experience, we started asking locals, expats, and long-term residents which Costa Rica car rental company they suggest

The same answer kept coming up: Adobe Rent a Car.

The first time we rented with Adobe was when my dad and sister came to visit. The price was obviously higher than with the other companies at first glance, but we had heard that Adobe was completely transparent with their fees and the price that they quote you is the absolute total price. 

When my dad and sister visited their flight was delayed by several hours, and they didn’t land until late at night. I assumed we’d need to pick the car up the next day.

Instead, an Adobe employee was waiting for them at the airport.

I told him I was so surprised he was there and he said, “Well you gave us your flight number when you booked your car. We knew the flight was delayed a few hours. Of course, we would stay open to wait for you!” I was so thankful and impressed.

We paid exactly what we were quoted online, left the standard deposit, and drove home.

Ten days later we returned the car without issues and the deposit was refunded immediately.

It’s now been almost 10 years since we moved to Costa Rica. Costa Rica Rental Car Insurance

There are two types of insurance required by law when renting a car in Costa Rica:

Liability Protection (Required)

This insurance covers basic damages to third parties property up to $20,000 and basic coverage of third party injury or death up to $100,000. This insurance is required by law in Costa Rica.

When you book through our Adobe link, this is already included in your quoted price, with a 0% deductible.

Some rental car companies in Costa Rica do not include the Liability Protection in their quote, make sure it is included if you book through another company so you can confirm the total price.

Car Protection (Required)

Direct car damages, collision, and rollovers

Total or partial theft of the rental car

Car Protection is also required by Costa Rica law. This means when you rent a car with Adobe you need to check off the box for Car Protection.

Adobe allows you to waive this if your credit card specifically covers car rentals in Costa Rica, but you must bring written proof. A brochure is not enough.

Total Protection (Optional)

This is the final type of car protection which is offered through Adobe. This insurance covers a tow truck, road assistance, damage to things like windows and tires, and a 4 million dollar coverage for third party injury or death. 

You are NOT required to purchase Total Protection by Costa Rica law, but it is highly recommended.

We find it makes us feel more comfortable knowing we have full peace of mind over our car rental. 

Costa Rica Car Rental Deposit

A $1,000 refundable deposit is standard with rental cars in Costa Rica.

We strongly recommend using a credit card, as the hold is released immediately after returning the car. Debit card refunds can take weeks.

Make sure your credit limit can handle the deposit so it doesn’t interfere with your trip spending.

How to Avoid Costa Rica Car Rental Scams

• Avoid third-party booking sites for car rentals in Costa Rica
• Book directly with a local company that shows full pricing
• Expect mandatory insurance and a deposit
• Ask questions before booking if anything is unclear
