Bocas del Toro is a stunning archipelago on Panama’s Caribbean coast. It is known for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and lush tropical landscapes. Whether you’re looking to relax on pristine sands, snorkel at vibrant coral reefs, or go surfing, Bocas del Toro has a beach that is perfect for you.

We created this guide to give you info on the best beaches, tell you how to visit them, inform you of the best hotels and restaurants nearby, and give you some advice on how to have the best experience possible.

As I mentioned above, the best way to get to a lot of these beaches is with a day tour. Alternatively, you can opt to stay at one of the beaches in a hotel.

However, first you need to actually get to Bocas del Toro. This can be a challenge because it is a somewhat remote location.

All transportation to the islands end in the main town called Isla Colon. From here you can catch a shared or private water taxi to the various other islands and beaches.

1. Red Frog Beach

Red Frog Beach is located on Isla Bastimentos. This is one of the most popular and iconic beaches in Bocas del Toro. It is known for its beautiful golden sand and vibrant atmosphere.

Here you can find beach bars, sunbathers, and water sport enthusiasts.

This beach is named after the distinctive red poison dart frogs that inhabit the area. In addition to the red frogs, the area is home to sloths, monkeys, and a variety of bird species.

Activities on Red Frog Beach

• Swimming: The clear, turquoise waters are perfect for a refreshing swim. Just be careful of the waves and follow any signs stating water conditions. Usually, the waters are calm here, but with poor weather conditions, it can be dangerous.
• Sunbathing: Relax on the golden sand and soak up the sun.
• Hiking: The surrounding jungle trails are always fun to explore. These trails are known for the famous red frogs that give the beach its name. Keep an eye out!

Should You Stay at Red Frog Beach?

We have stayed at hotels here in the past and have enjoyed it. There are plenty of places to eat and it is a nice area to relax.

However, you will need to book a water taxi for any trips into Bocas Town and tours can be more expensive from here.

2. Polo Beach

Polo Beach is located just south of Red Frog Beach on Isla Bastimentos. The beach gets its name from the local legend of a man named Polo who lived on the beach for many years.

Polo Beach is far less visited than Red Frog Beach, so if you want a more peaceful spot, this is the place to go.

There aren’t any hotels or restaurants on Polo Beach, but you can easily access this area from one of the places we have listed from Red Frog Beach.

3. Wizard Beach (Playa Primera)

Wizard Beach is also located on Isla Bastimentos. It is north of Red Frog Beach.

This beach is named for its magical ambiance and somewhat hidden location.

The area is home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, crabs, and occasionally, dolphins.

There aren’t any hotels or restaurants directly on Wizard Beach, but it is just a short walk from the downtown village area of Isla Bastimentos called Old Bank. Here you can find some excellent restaurants and accommodation options.

Activities on Wizard Beach

• Swimming: The waters at Wizard Beach are clear and inviting. However, the waves can be strong, so be cautious and follow any posted signs regarding water conditions.
• Sunbathing: Wizard Beach provides plenty of space to lay out your towel and bask in the sun.
• Hiking: The trail to Wizard Beach from the nearby village of Old Bank takes you through lush jungle terrain. You might even see various wildlife along the way.
• Surfing: The waves at Wizard Beach can be great for surfing. The waves here aren’t typically too intense, so even beginners should be able to enjoy it.

Should You Stay at Wizard Beach?

You wouldn’t be staying directly on Wizard Beach, but rather in Old Bank.

This area is more convenient to get to in comparison with Red Frog Beach. The reason is, that there is a water taxi that runs between Bocas Town on Isla Colon and Old Bank.

It is much more affordable to travel that route in comparison with likely having to get a private water taxi to Red Frog Beach.

However, keep in mind that Old Bank is a village. If you are looking for very peaceful off the beaten path vibes, this is not the place.

4. Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella)

Starfish Beach is located on Isla Colón. It is a remote location that is only accessible by boat. The best way to visit is with a full day combo tour to different beach locations.

This beach is named after the numerous starfish that can be seen in the shallow waters near the shore. Besides starfish, the area is home to a variety of fish and vibrant coral reefs.

There aren’t any hotels on the beach, but if you would like to eat something we recommend Restaurante Eilyn.

We love this beach for its white sand, clear turquoise water, and palm trees dotting the shore.

5. Zapatilla Islands

The Zapatilla Islands are located off the coast of Isla Bastimentos and are part of the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park.

These two small, uninhabited islands are known for their stunning white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs.

These islands are named after their shape, which resembles a “zapatilla” or slipper.

Keep in mind that there are no restaurants or hotels on these islands. the only way to visit is by boat tour. Most full day tours will take you here and give you some time to explore on your own.

6. Bluff Beach

Bluff Beach is located on Isla Colón. However, it is not close to Bocas Town. You will either need a taxi or a water taxi from Bocas Town in order to visit.

This stunning, expansive beach is known for its golden sand, powerful waves, and vibrant natural beauty.

Bluff Beach gets its name from its slightly elevated position and rugged coastline.

Activities on Bluff Beach

• Surfing: Bluff Beach is famous for its powerful waves. The surf here can be quite intense, with waves often reaching 3-4+ feet, and it’s best suited for experienced surfers. The surf conditions are influenced by local wind swells and ground swells, which can produce both lefts and rights along the beach. The beach offers a heavy shore break, which can result in some thrilling rides​.
• Swimming: The waves at Bluff Beach can be quite strong, so it’s important to be cautious when swimming. It’s best suited for experienced swimmers and surfers.
• Sunbathing: With its vast stretch of golden sand, Bluff Beach offers plenty of space to relax and soak up the sun.

• Bibi’s on the Beach: Probably the most popular beachfront restaurant in the area. Their menu features fresh seafood, delicious cocktails, and ocean views.
• Aqua Lounge: If you are looking for a cool bar and area to swim, this is the place I suggest going.
• Leaf Eaters Café: A delightful vegetarian and vegan café offering fresh, locally sourced dishes.
• Receta Michilá: This is the place to go if you want an elevated dining experience. Everything is delicious.
• Coquitos: A beachfront eatery known for its delicious pizzas and refreshing fruit drinks.

Should You Stay at Caranero Beach?

We have stayed here in the past and liked the area due to how easy and cheap it was to get to Isla Colon by boat. However, I kind of have mixed feelings about the island.

There are definitely more beautiful areas to stay in the archipelago, but they don’t provide the same abundance of great restaurants and ease of getting around.

The beach is nice and there are plenty of excellent hotels, but the island as a whole is not the nicest.

What to Pack for a Day at Bocas del Toro’s Beaches

When visiting Bocas del Toro’s beautiful beaches, your number one concern should be sun protection. Here’s a list of items to pack for a perfect beach day as well as what to bring for a full day boat tour.

• Snorkeling Gear: If you take a boat trip, the use of snorkel gear is most likely included. However, you might want to pack your own snorkel mask if you want to swim at other times during your trip. Buy it here.

• Motion Sickness Pills: If you take a day trip on a boat you might want this. I get motion sickness and I’ve actually never had an issue here because the waves typically aren’t big, but you never know! Buy it here.

• Snacks: If you take a day tour it typically includes a stop at a place for lunch. In our experience, the food at these places is typically overpriced and not the best. Instead, we like to pack our own snacks.
