We’ve rented cars in Costa Rica several times and have had some miserable experiences (which you can read about here). We don’t want you to go through the same things we dealt with.

When we started renting cars with Adobe that completely changed.

We love Adobe because they are a local company, are completely transparent in their fees, and have some of the best customer service we have ever experienced.

The Costa Rica Car Rental Discount

Adobe has been so generous in giving us some really amazing perks for you all. Here are all the wonderful things you get by booking your rental car through our website…..

A 5% TO 10% DISCOUNT – This discount fluctuates by season and demand. It will always be at least 5% though.

FREE SECOND DRIVER – Adobe actually doesn’t just stop at one free second driver. You can actually add multiple drivers at no extra cost. Usually, this costs an extra $4 per day. This is added automatically onto your reservation. When you arrive to pick up your car you can specify who your extra driver(s) are.

FREE ROOF RACKS TO USE – These are available for free to our readers upon request. If you would like roof racks, be sure to add a comment in your reservation saying that you need them. Adobe will be happy to save some for you.

FREE CAR DELIVERY/ PICK UP – Adobe is happy to drop off or pick up your car for free within 12 miles of any of their office locations. Just indicate which hotel, resort, Airbnb, hostel etc. you will be staying at in the reservation form. In the comment section of the reservation form, you can add any other details about having your car delivered. If you are staying over 12 miles away Adobe may charge a small delivery fee.

0% DEDUCTABLE – This applies to the Liability Protection. It is usually a 20% deductable.

DISCOUNTED SMART PHONE USAGE WITH UNLIMITED DATA USAGE- This is a new plan that Adobe has started called “Trio.” You can get a smart phone to use for your trip for only $12 per day. It is normally $14 per day. And yes, you can turn it on as a hot spot so multiple people can take advantage of it.

FREE BOOSTER SEAT AND/ OR CAR SEAT – Adobe has three versions of seats that are free to our readers; infant car seats, baby car seats, and booster seats. While making your reservation there will be a box to check off what you need.

FREE AIRPORT PICKUP – There are no rental car companies located at the San Jose and Liberia airport. Instead, you will need to drive 5 minutes from the airport to the Adobe office location. Adobe is more than happy to pick you up for free at the airport. Just make sure to indicate your flight number and arrival time on your reservation. Someone from Adobe will be waiting for you with a sign when you exit the airport.

DISCOUNTED GPS – It usually costs $9 a day to rent a GPS through Adobe. By booking through us you will only pay $6 per day. 

You can compare the price on our site to Adobe directly by following this link. You will see that our price is 5% to 10% cheaper. Just note this discount is only for the car itself. Unfortunately, Adobe can not give us a discount on insurance.

Also, when comparing the price from our site with Adobe’s site, you can not have two reservation forms open at one time. Otherwise, it will replicate the price and the price will appear the same through our site and Adobe’s.

The other bonuses (0% deductible on Liability Insurance, free second driver) are automatically included by booking through us.

Also, if you would like to compare our rate to other rental car agencies make sure that the rate you are looking at with other companies includes the mandatory insurance like Adobe’s rate does.

Often people think another company may be cheaper and then they are hit with the high mandatory insurance costs upon picking up their rental car. We don’t want you to have to go through that.

Costa Rica Mandatory Car Insurance

Costa Rica rental car insurance can be a bit confusing, so here is a complete breakdown of how it works…

When you book a car through Adobe you will have three different protection options. Let’s go through each one.

Liability Protection This insurance covers basic damages to third parties property up to $20,000 and basic coverage of third party injury or death up to $100,000 with 0% deductible. This insurance is required by law in Costa Rica. Every single person who rents a car needs to purchase Liability Protection.

The price you are quoted when you book your car through our site includes the Liability Protection fees. (You will see it checked off in your rental car booking) This is one of the many reasons we love Adobe. Most other rental car companies in Costa Rica do not include the Liability Protection in their quote.

This means that when you arrive to start your vacation in paradise the first thing you experience is a rental car agent telling you that you will actually have to pay several hundred dollars more than the price you were quoted online because of the Liability Protection.

We don’t think this is a good business tactic and neither does Adobe.

Car Protection: This insurance covers:

-Direct car damages, collision, and rollovers

-Total or partial theft of the rental car

Car Protection is also required by Costa Rica law. This means when you rent a car with Adobe you need to check off the box for Car Protection.

Adobe rent a car

Most rental car companies in Costa Rica bundle the Liability Protection and Car Protection together, meaning you have to pay for both of them because they are required by law.

If you have a letter from your credit card company stating that you are covered for car protection in Costa Rica you will not need to pay for the Car Protection insurance if you rent with Adobe.

Make sure you bring a letter or email from your credit card company stating you have car protection in Costa Rica to show as proof. Adobe will not accept a basic brochure.

Total Protection: This is the final type of car protection which is offered through Adobe. This insurance covers a tow truck, road assistance, damage to things like windows and tires, and a 4 million dollar coverage for third party injury or death. You are NOT required to purchase Total Protection by Costa Rica law.

The Car Rental Conditions

There is a $1,000 deposit on your car rental. This is standard with every rental car company in Costa Rica, but we have heard of some companies charging much more.

We suggest paying this deposit with your credit card because it is just a hold and will be returned immediately to you when you return your car if everything is OK. You can also do this on your debit card, but it can take a few weeks after you return your car for the bank to process this and refund the $1,000 on to your account.

– You need to be 23 years old to rent a car with Adobe.

– You can not rent a car with Adobe if you are over 75 years old.

There are no hidden fees with Adobe. The price you are given online is the total price. Just remember the $1,000 deposit.

The Best Car to Rent in Costa Rica

We recommend four-wheel drive to make things easier on yourself, but it is not absolutely necessary in every location in Costa Rica.

If you are going to the Nosara areaMonteverdeSan Gerardo de DotaSanta Teresa, or Montezuma we suggest a car with four-wheel drive. These areas are known for unpaved roads which aren’t the easiest without four-wheel drive. We’ve done some of these drives without it, but it hasn’t been easy!

Most of the rest of the country can be done without 4-wheel drive, however, we still suggest renting something with some clearance. Even though roads may be well paved they can be very hilly and it is just more comfortable to be in an SUV rather than a small car.

Pro Tip: We like to rent the Hyundai Crete because it is the cheapest SUV Adobe has, but it is still very comfortable.

The Best Way to Get Directions

You definitely need some type of GPS to get around here. Roads are unclear and constantly changing.

Adobe offers GPS rentals for $6 per day if you are renting through us. I know this adds up fast if you are traveling for several days.

If you have an unlocked cell phone the best and cheapest option is to stop at the Kolbi stand in the airport after you get through customs. At the Kolbi desk, you can purchase a SIM card for about $4. This money is then added as a credit to your SIM card.

You can then use Waze to get around. Waze is the best free app we have found for directions in Costa Rica.

We find it usually costs us about $1-$2 a day to use Waze with our Kolbi SIM card. The nice thing about Kolbi is that you can buy minutes at any grocery store or mini market in the country. We have a complete post about using your cell phone in Costa Rica if you need more tips.

Note: This will only work if your cell phone is unlocked for international usage. If you aren’t sure you can ask your cell phone provider, but they may not tell you the truth so that they can get you to purchase an international plan. I have an iPhone I purchased through Verizon. They told me it wasn’t unlocked and I couldn’t use it with an international SIM card. I have no problem using my Kolbi SIM card here in Costa Rica.

Another option is, Adobe just introduced a new option for staying connected which they are calling TRIO. With this option you can rent a smart phone provided by Adobe to use with unlimited data usage for $12 a day by booking through us (it’s usually $14). 

This is so new that it is not yet in the Adobe system. If you would like to take advantage of this you can just add a comment when you make your reservation and say you would like the TRIO plan for $12 a day. Adobe will add it to your reservation and your phone will be ready when you  pick up your car.

Safety While Driving In Costa Rica

Drivers in Costa Rica are a bit crazy, but as long as you are a somewhat experienced driver and feel confident in your abilities, you will likely be fine.

We strongly suggest not driving in San Jose. This area of the country has way too many cars on the road at any given time and people drive like maniacs.

If you would like to explore the downtown area, your best bet is to take an Uber. Uber is legal in Costa Rica (for now) and is usually about half the price of a taxi. Just download the Uber app and you’ll be good to go.

Most of the main roads in the country are well maintained. If you’d like to know what the drive is like to your destination just look on our destination page for the area you are planning to visit.

Should I Rent a Car in Costa Rica?

One of the most common questions we get asked is, “Should I rent a car in Costa Rica?” In our experience, with our Costa Rica rental car discount, it is almost always cheaper to rent a car than to depend on more expensive day tours which include transportation from your hotel.

We are really into off the beaten path activities which will give you a more cultural experience, support small local businesses, and are cheaper than activities from large companies. To get to these types of activities you almost always need a car.

However, we understand it can be scary to drive far distances in a foreign country. Adobe has just started a private shuttle company to provide customers with private transportation to your destination. Their rates are far cheaper than other private transportation options we have seen in the country. Plus, their dependability and professionalism is unmatched (in our opinion). 

BOOK A PRIVATE SHUTTLE

Once you arrive at your destination, you can get a rental car from Adobe for exploring the area. Adobe will happily deliver your rental car within twelve miles of any of their offices for free.

The Costa Rica Rental Car Process

Below this, you will see a box to make your reservation. After selecting your dates and drop off/ pick up location you will be directed to a page where you can select your car.

Adobe has a large fleet of vehicles for you to choose from. When selecting your vehicle, pay attention to how many people the car can fit and the amount of luggage that can fit.

Note: If you are unsure what to rent, feel free to email us. [email protected] We recently had the chance to go through every single vehicle that Adobe rents. We have a good idea of what is best for your particular needs.

After selecting your vehicle you will be directed to the Reservation Form. Keep in mind that you can always change your reservation details later if you need.

For example, if you would like your car delivered to your hotel but haven’t booked a hotel yet, just leave it blank for now. Adobe is happy to update that for you at a later point in time if you need.

The extra drivers and 0% deductible are automatically applied to all car rentals through our site. When you pick up your car Adobe will see that you rented through us and automatically add these perks. You do not need to select anything in your reservation to get them.

If you would like to add in the TRIO smartphone plan for $12 a day, or need a set of free roof racks, please leave a comment in the comment section of the reservation to let Adobe know so they can make sure to set those aside for you.

When you are finished, make sure you click “Reserve” not “Save Quote.” You should get an email within a few hours with your rental car reservation.

You are then all set! Your vehicle will be waiting for you when you arrive in Costa Rica! 🙂

Also, just note if you need to change or cancel your reservation you can just reply to your confirmation email to get in touch with Adobe. They are usually very good at responding within 24 hours.

You do not have to pay for anything ahead of time. You pay for your car upon pick up.

Note: If you are arriving at the San Jose airport you will select “Aeropuerto San Jose (SJO) as your pick up and drop off location.

If you are arriving at Liberia airport you will select “Aeropuero Liberia (LIR)” as your drop-off and pick-up location.

    Thank you for providing this discount. I am wondering what your opinion is on a large family (8 adults) staying at a villa in Tamarindo for eight days. We will be arriving at Liberia airport. We would like a car for some of our trip but probably don’t need it for all 8 days. We also need to somehow get to and from the airport and the shuttle rate our villa company provided seemed high to me.
    Any suggestions?

      Adobe actually recently started a private transfer company which would actually be perfect for your group. Their driver can pick you up at the airport and bring you to your villa. Here is the link to find out more and get a price quote.
      You can then rent a car from Adobe for whichever days you need and they can deliver it for free if you are located within 12 miles of their Tamarindo office. Just put in Tamarindo as your pick up point when filling in your reservation and specify exactly where your villa is located.

    1. Hi Marcy, That is a tough question. Case numbers are really high at the moment. However, I would say that I always feel fairly safe here because everyone wears masks, most places require temp checks and hand washing before entering, and most activities you will be doing will most likely be outside. If you decide to come, I would suggest booking as many things as possible with free cancellation (the Adobe rental car deal through us includes free cancellation). That way, if plans change you won’t lose out on money.

    1. Hi Allie,
      Yes, rainy season will be in full swing in late July. However, you should hopefully have mostly sunny days with just afternoon rains for a few hours.
      As far as renting a 4×4. I would suggest at least renting an SUV for clearance purposes, but you should be fine without a 4×4 for those two locations.
      Just keep an eye on the places you are booking as accommodations. Sometimes airbnb’s are located on tiny dirt roads and this can be difficult in the rainy season without a 4×4, but for driving between locations and in the towns, you will be fine.

    1. Hi Dacia, I just checked and it seems every single rental company closes at 10pm.
      In this situation, it is probably best to contact Adobe directly. They may be able to deliver your car to you in the morning.

That is with our discount included. So, the price you are quoted is with our discount already factored in.   8. Trying to book through your site and while some discount is showing, the benefit of $0 deductible, etc that you mention is not reflected. How/when will these be applied?
    Also, we are going from LIR to Playa Grande/Guanacaste for a few days then to La Anita Rainforest Ranch in Alajuela, then back to LIR. Probably will not venture out too far from our hotels because my activities are currently limited post-surgery. Any thought about whether we are okay with a sedan vs must have an SUV? Thanks in advance!

      Adobe will see that you booked through my site and automatically apply the 0% deductible when you pick up and pay for your car. As far as the car, I would ask at the ranch you are staying at. I believe the roads around there are not paved, but maybe they can give you better info. If the are flat enough you will probably be fine with a sedan, especially at this time of year while everything is dry, but I would definitely ask them.

  11. Im a little confused between the router/ hotspot rental and whether or not I may have a usable (internationally unlocked) phone in Costa Rica, I wont know until I get there. Can I reserve a hotspot and cancel it if needed or would you suggest to to go with the Kolbi sim option and not bother with the Router/hotspot? Also, if the kolbi sim card option doesn’t work, woudl the hot spot option even work?

    1. Hi Maria! The hotspot works everywhere that you have signal in Costa Rica. This is pretty much everywhere. Sometimes you’ll randomly hit a spot for a few minutes while driving that won’t have signal but it’s very rare. It’s a really good option because you just pay the daily rate and have unlimited usage of it. I’ll check with my contact from Adobe and let you know about reserving and canceling last minute. Kolbi will definitely be cheaper. Typically while using Waze for a 5 hour drive it will cost under $1, but it is hard to say if it will actually work if you arent sure if your phone is unlocked.

  12. Does the router rental mean we will have wifi? How is phone coverage in general once you get out into the mountains?

    1. Hi Kay! Yes the router is a wifi hotspot. You can connect multiple devices to it. It should hold up pretty well as far as a connection. We have driven all over the country and occasionally you will hit dead zones, but for the most part, there is coverage everywhere. If you opt to rent the router an Adobe employee will fully explain how it works to you when you pick up your car. Let me know if you have more questions!

  13. Hi Sarah. I’m sure you guys get a lot of emails, I sent you one but I haven’t heard back yet. I want to book my rental and I’m just not sure if I can do what I’m trying to do which is pick up in Liberia, keep the rental for 3 days while in La Fortuna, drive it to Tamarindo and return it there. Would that be ok? Also would it be cheaper to just do a weekly rental at that point? Any guidance would be great. Thanks!

    1. Alicia! I’m sorry. We’ve been traveling all week so everything got a little delayed. Yes! You can do that. When you rent just put in Liberia as your pick up point and Tamarindo as your drop off point. That is completely fine! Just note that the Tamarindo office is a bit north of Tamarindo near Playa Flamingo. If you want, Adobe will pick up your car for free within 12 miles of their office. Even if it is a bit over 12 miles they are pretty good about being lenient. Just let me know if you want to do this and which hotel you are staying at and I can ask them about it. I’m back in the country now and will answer right away. 🙂 Also, Adobe charges by day and they don’t have a weekly discount.

    1. Hi Natascha. Adobe’s office closes at 10pm and reopens at 5am. However, if you get a hotel nearby and want to get the car in the morning Adobe can deliver it to your hotel for free within 12 miles of their office. They start this service at 7:30 am.     I have questions regarding waiving the car protection (LDW) insurance. What kind of documents are needed from the credit card company? What coverage will be acceptable for waiving the Car Protection from the credit card car insurance? If I were to add second driver, does the second driver needs to present the documents as well?

    1. Hi! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. All you need from your credit card company is to bring an email or some other statement saying that you are covered for car protection in Costa Rica. It just needs to clearly show your name and credit card number. Your free second driver does not have to provide this as well. Only one person needs to show this proof. If you would like, you can always email Adobe with a copy of the info from your credit card company. That way they can clearly tell you if you are all set for avoiding the LDW insurance.     1. Hi Lynda! sorry for the delay in getting back to you. How long are you planning on staying in Bocas del Toro? What I would suggest is dropping the car off at the Adobe office in Puerto Viejo and then taking the bus over to the border. It is about $5 and 45 minutes to take the bus to the border. They run about every hour. Then I would rent the car in Puerto Viejo again for the rest of your trip back to San Jose. So you would have to book the car twice. There is usually a fee for dropping off the car at another location but if you want to do this just let me know. I can contact Adobe and they will probably wave the fee. The other option is, if you are ending your trip after that you can take the public bus from the border back to San Jose. It is about $10 per person. The reason I say this is because I dont know of a secure lot on the border and I would be hesitant about leaving the car there.     1. Hi Brooke! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The free second driver, zero percent deductible, and free drop off and pick up, are automatically included however Adobe is unable to change their computer system to state that just for us. When you pick up your car Adobe will see that you booked through my site and they will automatically give you those perks.
      However, I completely understand that it is had to trust everything you read online. If you want to double check with Adobe feel free to email them. Their email address is [email protected]

  22. I just reserved a car for January through your site, and got through the process very easily. One thing I noticed and wanted to ask about though is in the Confirmation of Reservation email I got from Adobe, it states, “To guarantee a reservation we require your credit card number.” It says that I can do that either by calling or online. I understand that even if I do this I won’t be charged until I actually pick up the vehicle, but I was wondering if you think this is a good idea, to make absolutely sure the rental is guaranteed? Thanks.

    1. Hi Ben, Adobe has started asking for credit card info because they have been having some issues lately with people reserving cars and then never actually showing up to rent them. As you said, they don’t charge you for anything and you can always cancel at any point without being charged. I would go ahead and call them or confirm online with a credit card. That way you can be sure you are all set and they know for sure that you are actually planning to rent.

    1. Hi Mike! Unfortunately, Adobe can’t easily change some parts of their booking system for us, so it still says 20% deductible even though it is in fact 0% when you book through us. When you go to pick up your car, Adobe will see that you reserved through my site and will automatically apply the 0% deductible. However, I completely understand that it is hard to trust what you read on the internet. Please contact Adobe if you want to just double check with them and be reassured.     1. Hi Courtney, yes you pay when you pick up your car. I’m not positive about foreign transaction fees. Ive never had any extra transaction fees with my car rentals and my card is from the US, but let me double check with Adobe to make sure. I’ll let you know in the morning. 🙂

Courtney, I just checked in with Adobe and the credit card transaction fee depends on your credit card company, but I did double check to make sure that they charge in dollars rather than converting to colones. You will be all set with that. Your credit card will be charged in dollars so you don’t need to worry about any type of currency conversion fee.       For some reason if you are on our site and look at Adobe’s page at the same time it will replicate the rate so you will see the same price on both sites. Try to check the rate on Adobe’s site while not having our site also open. You will then be able to see that the rate on Adobe’s site is higher.

  27. Hello! My husband and I fly out of SJO at 7am. We just reserved a car through your website with Adobe. I’m assuming we would have to drop off the rental car the night before since Adobe doesn’t open till 8am? Does Adobe have a key drop box if the car is returned after closing time or does the car need to be returned by the time Adobe closes? Also, do you have any recommendations on places to stay around the SJO airport that has a shuttle service to the airport early in the morning since we will have had to return our car the night before?

    1. Hi Chelsea, The Adobe office near the airport actually opens at 5am. You will have no problems dropping it off and then having them drive you to the airport with plenty of time. However, if you would prefer to drop it off the night before you can even just email Adobe (just hit “reply” on your reservation) and let them know you would like the car picked up from your hotel. They will pick up the car for free within 12 miles of the airport. I know Adventure Inn near the airport is really great and they have a free shuttle. If you book through their website and pay cash upon arrival they will also give you a 10% discount. https://www.adventure-inn.com/

    We’re trying to book a rental car right now from the Puerto Viejo office. Our flight leaves from San Jose at 5:41pm on Friday, July 6th, and the shuttle van that we planned to take from Puerto Viejo to San Jose leaves Puerto Viejo at 7am, but the Adobe site doesn’t have the option to return the car sooner than 8am. Our AirBnB owner pretty much told us we didn’t have any other option besides driving to get to/from the house we are staying at. What would you recommend for returning the car?

      I think your best bet would be to return the car the night before. Unfortunately, the Adobe office in Puerto Viejo office doesnt open until 8am. However, Adobe will pick up the car from you for free from your Airbnb. When you book your car just leave a comment of where you airbnb is and that you would like the car picked up. Of course, you will then have to find a way to get to the shuttle bus in the morning. There are a lot of little tuk-tuk types of taxis in Puerto Viejo though. You should ask your airbnb owner if they have a phone number for one (most locals have a favorite taxi driver they always use) or if they can arrange a taxi ride for you for that morning.
      Your other option is to skip the shuttle entirely (if you can still cancel it) and drive back to the airport. You can drop the car off at the Adobe office (Aeropuerto San Jose is the office name) and they will give you a ride 5 minutes away to the airport. This may actually be cheaper than the shuttle, but I can’t say for sure.

  31. Hi there! We will be traveling with 5 and wondering if you have a recommendation on which SUV would be best of the three offered through Adobe? Your video mentioned you have links of videos showing each car but I can’t seem to find them. Also, would you recommend getting the full add on protection that includes roadside assistance and such?     1. Hi Katrina,
      I’d recommend getting at a minimum the Hyundai Tucson. That would put three people in the back seat. It won’t be the most comfortable, but it’s completely doable. The reason I say at a minimum the Tucson is because I’m not sure how much luggage you are all bringing. That will fit 4 regular size suitcases. If you are bringing smaller bags you can definitely fit 5.
      Ideally, I would take the Mitsubishi Montero Sport or the Hyundai Sante Fe. Both are a bit more expensive but will give you more seating space and more trunk space. We drove the Mitsubishi recently and it is a beautiful vehicle to drive!
      The good thing about the extended protection is that it includes roadside assistance and minor damages to the vehicle such as a broken windshield or popped tire. The other protections do not. In Costa Rica, it can be really expensive to have these little things replaced and it does sometimes happen (but hopefully not) that you might pop a tire or get a crack in the windshield from rocky roads. We always take the extended protection just to be on the safe side.

    1. Unfortunately, they are pretty strict about it. However, check out the company Vamos. They also have a good reputation and their minimum rental age is 18.

    1. Hi Ben,
      Unfortunately, Adobe requires a 2-day rental minimum. I’m checking right now if any of the other rental car companies will allow you to rent for just a few hours, but I’m not having much luck finding anything. Some places (like Budget) allow you to rent for one day. You could do that and just return the car early. They have an office in Quepos and one near the airport. Just keep an eye out for adding the mandatory insurance costs because I don’t think they include that in their price.

  34. my family is going to be going to Costa Rica and we were looking at rental cars, there are five of us. When I was looking there were several cars that say they can only hold 4 people but I know they have enough seats for 5. Would it be ok if we rented one that says they can only hold 4?

The discount is a bit lower temporarily due to crazy high demands for cars but the other benefits (free second driver, 0% deductible, free cell phone) still apply. I know these dont show up when you book but that is because it is too difficult for Adobe to change their booking system just for us. I assure you these benefits will all be applied when you pick up your car.       Yes, with 5 of you renting a car is definitely the best option. Driving in San Jose isn’t fun, but you can do it, especially if it is just to get to the other side of the city. We live in San Jose so we drive very often, but it can be a bit scary at times. Also, try to make sure you are driving either later in the evening or midday. Driving during rush hour is a nightmare!

    1. Hi Gary! I just checked in with my contact at Adobe and it is no problem that you get in at 8:35 pm. Someone from Adobe will be waiting for you at the airport with a shuttle (the rental car office is a few minutes away). Just make sure you specify your flight number and scheduled arrival time when you make your reservation. As long as they have that info they will even wait if your flight is delayed. When you exit the airport just look for someone with an Adobe sign.

    Adobe told me that they can’t rent us a car, because they need the original passport with the immigration seal which you don’t get as a cruise passenger.
    After doing some online research this seems to be an adobe company policy. Do you have any other reliable car rental companies that rent cars to cruise ship passengers?

If you search on my site but have a tab open with Adobe’s site as well, it replicates the page. Once you pick your vehicle and get to the page that asks for Customer information, see if it says “Welcome Costa Rica Vibes” in the top right corner. That means you are on the discount from my site. If it says “Welcome iframe client” you are viewing the price from Adobe’s site directly. Another words, I guess you have to search one at a time and can’t have my site and Adobe’s site open at the same time in different tabs. Let me know if you have more questions! 🙂

  53. HI Sarah, My sisters and I are flying into san jose 2/15, staying with a friend, then heading to Nosara area for 6 nights (yoga retreat). Then driving back to hotel near aiport on 2/23, flying home 2/24.

    Everything you said makes sense and I appreciate this information. THe adobe rental quote was $811, which seemed very high. I got some other quotes that included hte same stuff (pretty sure) for 300-400 less. That said, the only 4 wheel drive available was a Mitsubish L200 4X4 manual or similar / GROUP K, which may be a fancy 4 wheel drive car. Am I missing something? I did not even order GPS or anything. Can I get away with not renting this if I am just basically using this car to get from San Jose to Nosara area and back again.

    1. Hi Jenn. I just checked your dates. You are right. It is super expensive because unfortunately, all the other SUV’s except for the Mitsubishi L200 are sold out for those dates. 🙁 I’d go with a different company for this one so that it is cheaper. Feel free to email me [email protected] if you want to run the names of the other companies by me and I can tell you which have good reputations.
      Also, you can get away without renting a GPS. Roads are a little crazy here though, so having something would help. If you have an unlocked phone you can get a SIM card at the airport or on Google Maps you can now usually type in your destination ahead of time and it will direct you even without wifi. You just have to hit “save for offline” or something like that. Just try it out ahead of time because I sometimes have problems with it.

    1. Hi Andrea! No they will unfortunately not be open that late. Your best bet would be if you are staying near the airport to take an Uber (unless your hotel has a shuttle service) and then have Adobe deliver the car to your hotel in the morning. They open at 5am and will deliver for free within 12 miles of the airport. In your rental car booking there is a comment section. Just let them know which hotel and what time you would like the car. You can also leave any questions in the comment section. They are usually good at responding within 24 hours.

  55. A letter from my bank about my car insurance? I dont understand this…How would my bank know if my car insurance covers car rental? Wouldn’t I need a letter from my car insurance company? What am I missing?

    1. Hi Kenya! Thanks for letting us know that this isn’t entirely clear so we can make it more clear on our site. Fixing it up now!
      Most credit card companies (at least within the US) have some type of rental car insurance included with your credit card plan. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always cover you internationally. You will need to check with your credit card company and ask if you have rental car coverage in Costa Rica. If you have car insurance which covers you for rental cars, that is definitely an option as well.
      I’d suggest checking with both your credit card companies and car insurance company to see if either will cover you if you rent a car in Costa Rica. You then just need to show proof when you pick up your car with Adobe that you are covered for direct car damages, collision, and rollovers as well as total or partial theft of the rental car. If you are unsure if you are covered, I suggest emailing Adobe [email protected] before you book your car with the details of the coverage you have either through your credit card or car insurance. They will get back to you really fast and can tell you if your coverage will be enough.
