La Vela Boutique Hotel
La Vela Boutique Hotel
La Vela is one of those places where you really feel like you’re in Manuel Antonio.
You wake up to howler monkeys in the trees, sip your Costa Rican coffee by the pool, and in less than five minutes you can be either:
- Walking into Manuel Antonio National Park, or
- Swimming at Playa Espadilla.
It’s a small, 21-room boutique hotel wrapped in tropical gardens, with a laid-back pool area, friendly staff, and plenty of wildlife passing through. The vibe is more charming and relaxed than ultra-luxury, but the location is honestly hard to beat.
Location: Manuel Antonio
La Vela feels like a little jungle oasis tucked right next to all the action.
- Monkeys, iguanas, birds, and sometimes toucans hang out in the trees around the property.
- The pool area is the heart of the hotel — loungers, umbrellas, and a calm, tropical feel.
- Staff get a lot of love in reviews for being warm, welcoming, and genuinely helpful.
If you want to park the car (or skip renting one) and just walk everywhere, this is a great pick.
Rooms
All rooms are air-conditioned, with comfy beds, quality linens, Wi-Fi, coffee makers, safes, and modern bathrooms with hot water, hairdryer, and toiletries. Decor is clean and simple — more “modern beachy” than super styled.
You’ve got several categories to choose from:
Standard Rooms
Cozy, budget-friendly ground-floor rooms with a terrace facing the gardens.
- 1 queen or 2 single beds
- A/C, cable TV, mini-fridge, coffee maker, safe
- Private bathroom with hot water
These are the most compact rooms, great if you’re out exploring most of the time and just want a comfortable place to sleep. A few guests felt they could be a bit less “bare” and more cozy, so if design details matter a lot to you, you may prefer Superior or Deluxe.
Superior Rooms
A step up in space and comfort, also with garden views and a private terrace.
- 1 queen bed
- Slightly larger than Standard
- Same core amenities
Perfect for couples who want a bit more breathing room while still staying in the more affordable range.
Deluxe Rooms
More spacious with a king bed and views over the pool and gardens.
- 1 king bed (option for a rollaway for an extra guest)
- Private terrace overlooking pool/gardens
- Extra space to spread out
These are a nice “sweet spot” if you care about room size and comfort but don’t necessarily need a full suite. A few guests did mention that, despite the “Deluxe” label, some rooms still feel fairly simple and not like a true 4-star luxury room — just something to keep expectations realistic.
Suites & Master Suite
For those who love space:
Suites
- King bed
- Larger, open layout
- Terrace with garden views
- Option for rollaway bed(s) for extra guests
Master Suite
- Approx. 700 sq ft
- King bed + sitting area with sofa
- Mountain views from a furnished patio
- Semi-kitchen setup (sink, microwave, mini-fridge, counter space)
- Open-plan layout (no doors separating bedroom and sitting area)
Ideal if you want a more “apartment-like” feel or are staying a bit longer. Great for couples who like room to unpack, work, or just lounge.
Family Options
La Vela is also strong for families and small groups:
Two-Bedroom Tropical / Family Suite (interconnected)
- Two interconnected rooms, each with a queen bed
- Up to 4 guests
- Terrace with garden views
- Semi-kitchen (cooktop, microwave, fridge, utensils)
- Two bathrooms
Two-Story Family Suite
- ~720 sq ft over two levels
- King bed downstairs, queen + twin + sofa bed upstairs
- Up to 6 guests
- Two bathrooms
- Semi-kitchen
- Balcony/terrace to watch wildlife
These are perfect if you want more space + the ability to prep simple meals, and still be walking distance from the beach and park.
Amenities & Food
La Vela comes with lots of small perks that make the stay easy:
- Free breakfast – hot and cold options, generous portions, and good coffee
- Swimming pool – with jungle views and massage jets, great for a midday cool-down
- New tiki bar (seasonal) – cocktails and tropical drinks by the pool (note: it’s not always open every day; one guest was sad it was closed on a Thursday)
- Brick-oven pizza – guests rave about the pizza; it’s an easy dinner option after a day in the park
- Tropical gardens around the property
- Gift shop with Costa Rican souvenirs
- Free Wi-Fi throughout
- Daily housekeeping – though one guest did feel cleaning could have gone a bit beyond just making the bed and taking out the trash
Overall, people are very happy with the breakfast, the pool area, and the friendliness of the staff.
Location
This is the main reason many people book La Vela — and why we like recommending it:
- 5-minute walk to Manuel Antonio National Park entrance
- 5-minute walk to Playa Espadilla (public beach)
- Short walk to multiple restaurants — from simple Costa Rican sodas to seafood and international spots
- Plenty of souvenir shops and small boutiques nearby
You really can stay here without a car and be totally fine. Several guests mentioned they chose it specifically for walkability and were very happy with that decision.
Little Things to Know (Honest Bits)
To keep expectations realistic:
- Some rooms are described by guests as a bit simple or bare for the price — not shabby, just not super “designed.”
- A couple of people mentioned small room size in certain categories, especially when booked as “Deluxe.”
- One guest noted no windows in their room, which can make it feel a bit closed in — if natural light is important to you, it’s worth requesting a room with windows/terrace when booking.
- Some minor maintenance/comfort quirks pop up in reviews:
- Noisy mini-fridge or A/C (easily solved by unplugging the fridge at night, which one guest did)
- No hooks in the bathroom for clothes or towels
- Shower pressure not super powerful in at least one room
- Not always a place to dry clothes — to be fair, that’s a common Costa Rica problem
- A couple of guests expected a true “4-star hotel feel” and felt the details didn’t fully match that label (furniture layout, cupboard doors, towel changes, etc.).
None of these are dealbreakers for most people, but they’re good to know so you go in with the right expectations: comfortable boutique stay in a fantastic location, not ultra-luxe resort.
Why We Love It
We like La Vela Boutique Hotel because it hits a really nice combo:
- 🌿 Jungle atmosphere with regular wildlife sightings
- 🏖 Walk-to-everything location (park, beach, restaurants)
- 🛏 A solid variety of room types, including great family and suite options
- 🥐 Good breakfast and genuinely tasty pizza on-site
- 😊 Staff who consistently get praised for being friendly, upbeat, and helpful
It’s a great fit if you want your Manuel Antonio days to be:
walk → explore → swim → pizza & pool → sleep well → repeat.
